The forum needed it's first gaming thread so starting it off with a Dragon Quest one. Any of yous into the series and if so what games?

My history with Dragon Quest is bizarre as despite being a big fan of the series, having played Monsters on the GBC and DQ9 on the DS, and really enjoying them too, I somehow did not pick up another main series game until DQ11 only recently! I have so much catch-up to do but not complaining as Dragon Quest is good, solid fun. Story is never anything too special but the music (rip Koichi), gameplay, characters, and delightful Akira Toriyama artwork (rip to him too) makes up for it.

I'm a big fan of JRPGs but Dragon Quest is a series I haven't taken the time to get into just yet. I picked up a copy of Dragon Quest VIII since I heard it was one of the best places to start. One of the most curious things I've noticed about this series is that it's extremely popular in Japan, but it's quite niche in the west.
